Belt Free State refers to the fictional republic in Norman Spinrad's novel The Men in the Jungle. Established in Sol's asteroid belt by refugees from apartheid South Africa, a reference to the Afrikaner republics - Orange Free State and Transvaal - defeated by imperialist Britain in the Second Anglo-Boer War, it was overrun by fortune seekers in a mineral rush.
