Firefly is a libertarian space western television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon. Set in the year 2517, following the arrival of humans in a new star system, the series follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The nine characters who live on Serenity fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the outskirts of society, as part of the pioneer culture that somehow developed in opposition to an oppressive central government. Thus it plays to the self-indulgent belief of many middle class Americans that government was the source of all their problems. The same demographic also bought into a romantic and false history of the American Western experience which minimized the massive role of the Federal government in opening frontiers to settlement.
