- Round-faced boy
- Lives with his grandmother
- Has a pet toad, Trevor
- Starts at Hogwarts the same year as Harry Potter
- Extraordinarily forgetful and accident-prone
In HPPS 6, Neville is on Platform Nine And Three Quarters at the same time as Harry Potter. He is trying to find his lost toad, and later, on the train, he continues his search, aided by Hermione Granger. Trevor finally turns up in the boats once they've crossed the lake to Hogwarts. He is Sorted into Gryffindor after a long deliberation, but forgetfully runs off with the Sorting Hat and has to bring it back. He tells his fellow students how he was brought up by his grandmother, and manifested no magical powers for years, despite his Great-Uncle Algie's efforts, until he was accidentally dropped out of a window and bounced. Algie then bought Neville his toad.
In HPPS 9, Neville receives a Remembrall from his grandmother. Draco Malfoy tries to steal it, but Professor McGonagall forces him to return it. In their first flying class, Neville pushes off too soon, goes up in the air and then falls off his broom, breaking his wrist. After being healed by Madame Pomfrey, he tries to return to Gryffindor Tower, but has forgotten the password, so he goes to sleep in the hall outside. He is awakened by Harry and Ron, who are going to the midnight duel with Draco Malfoy, and their reluctant companion Hermione; he joins them because he doesn't want to be left alone. When the duel turns out to be a set-up, he flees from Filch with the others, and is the first to notice that the locked room they're hiding in is actually the forbidden third-floor corridor, and is inhabited by a giant three-headed dog. They managed to escape and return to Gryffindor Tower. After that, Neville seems to prefer to forget about the whole incident.
